A linear space of matrices gives rise naturally to a family of algebraic varieties: the k-th collineation variety, parametrised by size k minors. In this talk, we address the study of the collineation varieties starting from the initial case of pencil of matrices. This approach naturally leads to new stratification of tensor spaces. We present some of these stratifications and we recover varieties of interest in the study of border rank and border subrank of tensors in terms of our strata.
