Unraveling cave-dwelling bat conservation by Jennifer de Sousa Barros

Abstract: Subterranean habitats are good roosts for many bat species, protecting them against predators and bad weather and favoring reproduction, parental care, and social interaction. Understanding how cave bat communities are related to caves can facilitate a better understanding of roost selection processes, elucidating the management and conservation of cave environments.

Bio: With over ten years of experience studying bats, Jennifer received her master’s from the Universidade Federal de Lavras and her Ph.D. from the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco in Brazil, where she focused on bat cave selection across multiple habitats and developed a prioritization strategy for cave conservation in Brazil. Her research led to a postdoctoral fellowship at the Zukunftskolleg from the University of Konstanz, to understand the behavioral ecology in cave bat roosting energetic strategies in Cyprus. Currently, she is leading the Brazil Program of Bat Conservation International, focused on protecting caves with endangered species and large colonies in Brazil.
