Requirements

What does it take to study Mathematics in the Bachelor of Education program?

As a teacher, you will be required to posses a diverse set of skills and expertise. Of course you should be able to identify with the contents of your subjects and take much pleasure in sharing your own knowledge and passion about mathematics with your students. You have to prepare teaching material, sometimes along with colleagues, and prove that you have a high amount of pedagogical knowledge. Furthermore, it is important that you have a set of social skills like communication skills, the ability to manage conflicts, resiliency, motivational capability and enthusiasm. These skills will also help you when it comes to working with the parents of your students.

For the mathematical part of your studies you should of course be interested in the subject and wish to gain a detailed understanding of it. It is inevitable to be highly persistent, as studying mathematics is much about learning how to approach and solve mathematical problems in general as well as how to prove or refute mathematical hypothesis, whereas solving routine problems takes a much smaller part compared to school mathematics. In order to overcome typical difficulties, an affinity to logical thinking and systematic problem solving as well as a high frustration tolerance are very helpful.
