Abstract: We discuss exponential stability in the framework of evolutionary equations, a class of linear operator equations which comprises classical partial di fferential equations of mathematical physics, certain delay-equations,  integro-di fferential equations as well as diff erential-algebraic equations. The main problem is to defi ne a suitable notion for exponential stability, as the solutions of evolutionary equations are not continuous in general. Hence the classical pointwise de finition for exponential decay does not work. With the right defi nition at hand, we prove a characterisation result for exponential stability similar to the famous Gearhart-Prüß Theorem in the framework of C_0-semigroups.
