Abstract: We discuss exponential stability in the framework of evolutionary equations, a class of linear operator equations which comprises classical partial differential equations of mathematical physics, certain delay-equations, integro-differential equations as well as differential-algebraic equations. The main problem is to define a suitable notion for exponential stability, as the solutions of evolutionary equations are not continuous in general. Hence the classical pointwise definition for exponential decay does not work. With the right definition at hand, we prove a characterisation result for exponential stability similar to the famous Gearhart-Prüß Theorem in the framework of C_0-semigroups.
